The Good Daughter is Amra Pajalic’s first novel and what a great challenging story it is. The author has drawn from her own experience as a child of Bosnian Muslim background growing up in St Albans, in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The Good Daughter confronts the problems of cultural identity in the day to day to day lives of teenagers. It was shortlisted in 2007 for the Victorian Premier’s Awards for an Unpublished Manuscript by an Emerging Writer.
The main protagianist is Sabiha has a lot to deal with; she is from Bosnian Muslim heritage and is struggling with her Australian identity, her friendship group, her sexuality , bullying, her strict grandfather and her mothers mental health disorder. Sabiha is always concerned with who she will hang out with, what will she wear, and will she end up with a boyfriend from her own culture like her mother so desperately wants?
A great read!
